by E-NewsCast Team
March 11th, 2010

Did you know that there are five species of Pacific salmon and one species of Atlantic salmon? Further, did you know that all 5 species of Pacific salmon run wild in Alaska?

We’re proud of our wild salmon here in Alaska, and rightly so. On the one hand the wild salmon are great sport fish and we Alaskans love to spend gorgeous summer weekends challenging them.

On the other hand our commercial fisheries are healthy and self-sustaining. They are able to catch enough wild salmon to satisfy most of the world wide demand for fresh wild fillets in the restaurants and packaged wild salmon on grocery store shelves.

King Salmon

The Chinook salmon is nicknamed king salmon in Alaska. It is the official Alaska state fish.

Description

Of all the Pacific salmon the king is the largest. A 97-pound king was caught by a sport fisherman in 1986 on the Kenai

Ten Tips For Effective Angling

by E-NewsCast Team
March 9th, 2010

I also like to call this list ten things my Dad taught me about fishing. Fishing has always been an important part of my life. My Dad used to take me fishing all the time, in fact, “take a kid fishing” was a rule he lived by. He showed me how to fish, the best bait to use while fishing, and methods to catch more fish. Sure this list isn’t everything you need to know about fishing but using these basic techniques will insure you to have a “good day fishing.”1. Always set the hook properly. Make sure your fish is hooked before you start reeling.2. Keep steady pressure on the fish. Don’t give the fish a chance to spit out the lure or bait. Keep your line taut with no slack and keep the rod tip out of the water. You …

Colorado Bassin’ 101

by E-NewsCast Team
March 8th, 2010

I know a lot of fisherman in Colorado mainly target trout, but the bass fishing can be excellent at times too!!! During the summer months I spend most of my fishing time on smaller ponds targeting those big old bucketmouths. They bite hard, fight hard, and will have any angler addicted if given the chance.

A lot of trout fisherman have problems making the transition to bass for a few reasons. When you’re used to throwing out tiny spinners and spoons, a big bass plug or jig looks huge. Bass routinely eat bluegills, baby bass, bullfrogs, and even snakes, so don’t be shy about using big tackle…its amazing how many small fish I’ll catch using a big Zara Spook.

Do you have to buy a new rod and reel for bass fishing? No!!! You can get away with using light tackle in certain situations…actually for most smaller ponds in the metro area

March 7th, 2010

When looking for information on how to fly fish, fly fishing tips or fly fishing techniques, many anglers, or anglers to be,who limit their search to books or material written ithin the last few years or decades are short-changing themselves.

Fact is, many anglers continue to miss out on great fly fishing information by not reaching back into the rich history of the sport and seeking the advice and wisdom of true fly fishing pioneers.

Now when I say pioneers, I’m talking about the guys who didn’thave anyone to learn from – the groundbreakers.

Remember that when dry-fly fishing first made its appearance here in America from England it came without instructions.

That’s when anglers such as Emlyn Gill, George La Branche, Theodore Gordon and Samuel Camp, just to name a few, came up with their own set of instructions for dry-fly fishing.

Yes, they were the true pioneers – and they wrote the first

Reading the Beach: A Necessary Skill

by E-NewsCast Team
March 6th, 2010

The ability to Read the Beach is a skill that takes a lifetime to perfect. It is however a necessary skill to acquire as it effectively informs us where to place our bait and increases our chances of catching a fish. The ability to read the beach allows us to identify sloughs, highways, gutters and currents just by viewing the wave action.

Tidal action, currents and the wind cause forces that push bodies of water towards the shore forming waves along the way. The waves push upwards as it passes over sand bars. Sand Bars are bodies of sand that are not fixed and run along the sea shore. Just as sand dunes are affected by the wind, sand bars are affected by the action of the water.

The landscape under the water is more or less similar to the beach associated with it. Notice the landscape while standing on the shoreline
