The Ideal Man’s Bedroom
In today’s world, where the gender gap has almost closed completely, you would be surprised to learn that there are still many differences between the sexes. Despite the messages of feminism and post-feminism, we find that some of the stereotypical differences between men and women do really exist. In fact, in the battle of the sexes, it would be fair to say that there are no winners and that we are all equal, but different.
One of the ways in which this is reflected is in the way that we decorate our homes. Men have different tastes from women, and it is no longer a question simply of blue for boys and pink for girls.
For the purposes of this article, let’s focus on the ideal man’s bedroom. While some men may be more flamboyant than others, and some men prefer a quieter décor, it is true to say that men prefer to have more functional, plain rooms than women.
In a single man’s bedroom, you will therefore find fewer ornaments and quieter colors. The furniture that you will most likely find are:
- A bed/sofa bed
- A cupboard
- A lamp
- A TV
- Laundry hamper
- An armchair or small sofa
- Shelves
If you are into sports, you will need storage for your sports equipment. You may want to hang your tennis racquet on the wall when not in use, as a wall decoration. Other wall decorations can include pictures of your favorite sportsmen. Similarly, if you are into music, you can make that the theme of your room, with pictures of your favorite musicians and places for your musical instruments.
Make sure that you have sufficient shelving for electronic equipment, including stereos, and outlets for cell phones, ipods, and other modern day recreational devices.
Another important aspect of the room is the color scheme. Although a man’s room tends to have a less “fancy” color scheme than that of a woman, a definite pattern makes it look more pleasant and orderly. Popular colors for men are red, brown, gray, or dark gold. You can also blend certain colors to achieve a more impressive look. Express your color scheme through your bedding, curtains, walls, area rugs, and throw pillows on the sofa and bed. A soft, warm area rug, such as a natural flokati rug, will add a touch of luxury to the room, making it a great place to wake up to in the morning.
Most men don’t tend to put up too many wall hangings or decorations in the bedroom – maybe two or three. One popular idea is to decorate a wall with a mural, and put a mirror on another. If the room is fairly small, this can lend to it the illusion of size.
Lighting can be very practical – an overhead standard light for regular night use, such as tidying up and working, and a standing up lamp for reading or adding a more informal or intimate atmosphere to the room.
The most important part of decorating your room, of course, is that it expresses you, and that is very individual. But the above observations will surely help you.
