Decorating with Slipcovers
Is your couch showing everyday wear and tear? Whether you have little ones running around your home or you have pets that curl up on you sofa all day long, it soon starts to show use. A sofa that is used frequently can show dark stains, unraveling of threads, and areas in the cushions that are pushed flat. Purchasing a new sofa is very expensive and useless if the couch frame itself is still sturdy. What can you do to give your sofa a facelift? Decorate with slipcovers.
Slipcovers are not only for your sofa, you can use them on all of your chairs, recliners, ottomans, loveseats, club chairs, wing chairs, and dining chairs too. Slipcovers can create a new look for your furniture and it is more affordable then purchasing new furniture or reupholstering. Slipcovers also protects your furniture from everyday wear on your sofa or chairs so you don’t need to wait until you see the wear to use slipcovers; use them to prevent wear also.
Slipcovers all year long
If you want to change the look of your room then consider changing slipcovers according to what season it is. For example, when spring rolls around, you are ready to open the doors, rearrange, and clean your home. Use a slipcover that makes you feel cheerful and happy. What color do you like most in the spring? This is the color you want to decorate with.
In the fall, you need a warm color to relax you and prepare for a nice long winter. You can throw a nice warm rug down on the floor in front of the sofa and give your entire living room a serene feel. In the winter, you want a slipcover that is warm and cozy looking and feels softer.
Slipcovers for special Occasions
If you are hosting a dinner party or special occasion in your home, you will probably spend a couple of days scrubbing your home from top to bottom to prepare. This includes laying out the best china, shampooing the carpet, and cleaning the windows. Add slipcovers around your dining room table where everyone will be sitting down to dine together. You can instantly create a formal look, a Victorian look, or a calm look with slipcovers.
Tips to make slipcovers fit
Before purchasing slipcovers, you need to make sure that you know exactly what size you will need. Slipcovers can be expensive and if you don’t have a sure fit, you may end up stretching the material and causing flaws or rips. Here are some tips to help you create a great look with slipcovers.
- If your furniture is made from leather, the slipcovers will slip around. Use a non-skid rug pad on the top of the cushions that you can cut to fit before placing the slipcover on. This will keep it from sliding around.
- If you are using a light colored slipcover over dark colored cushions, place a light colored sheet down on top of the cushions first and then add the slipcover. The sheet will keep the dark colors from coming through the slipcover.
- If your sofa has piping around the edge, you can either take the cushion cover off or place the slipcover on or you can add some polyester filling to place down overtop of the piping to cover it and then place the slipcover on.
