When You Work From Home

These days, more and more people are working from home. Some are single parents who cannot afford childcare while they support their family, others are businessmen wanting to cut down on office expenses, and others are students needing to make some money on the side while they are at college.

Whatever your reason for working from home, you have probably come across people with the misapprehension that because you are at home you have all the time in the world to do housework and talk on the telephone. Home working does not yet get the respect that working from an office receives with regard to your time. The classic line is, “Of course you’ve got time to come here/do that/call them because you’re at home anyway.”

As anyone who has worked from home on a long-term basis will tell you, that could not be farther from the truth. And accordingly, you need to decorate your home in the most labor-intensive way so that you can get away with allowing as little housework as possible to interfere with your working schedule, yet still having a normal-looking home.

Here are a few tips:

-          Don’t have too many excess items all over the place, such as superfluous ornaments that constantly need to be dusted and put away. Such things can make a room look overcrowded and waste a lot of time when it comes to cleaning.

-          If you change the flooring in your apartment, make sure to get a material that involves easy cleaning, rather than laborious waxing and washing. For instance, white Italian marble tiles may be absolutely beautiful when they are first put in, but they always look dirty and constantly need washing. You are better off with good-quality carpeting that can be vacuumed very quickly or a neutral colored marble tile that is easily washed. Also remember that a good rug covers a multitude of stains, so you may consider getting some pretty floral area rugs or even polypropylene area rugs, which wash well and easily.

-          Make sure that the paint on your walls is washable and easily cleaned. In fact, all of your soft furnishings should be washable, including sofa covers, curtains, and tablecloths. It’s very easy to take them off first thing in the morning, put them into the washing machine – and then go and do some work for a couple of hours!

-          Choose neutral colors for your carpets and sofa covers, as these do not attract the dirt in the way of light colors and do not show up the dust in the manner of darker colors. The great plus with neutral colors is that they also go with everything and therefore you don’t have to worry all the time about matching color schemes too exactly.

Added to the above, there are also some commonsense habits that you could develop, such as making definite slots in your day for housework and home work – and then keeping to them. The one should not overlap with the other, otherwise you will end up getting neither of them done. But in order for you to be able to do this, it is necessary to follow the guidelines above to give you a positive start and a good-looking home – where you will be spending most of your day …
