One way or another you have come to the conclusion that thedaily commute to corporate America just isn’t going to cut itanymore. Or maybe, you have already been able to stay home withyour kids for a while, but now need some extra income. One way or another, you have decided its about time to become awork at home mom or WAHM. This is an exciting journey and there are many decisions to makealong the way. One of the first decisions you are going to have to make iswhether you would be better off with a work at home job or awork at home business. Either one of them could be the right fitfor you, so let’s take a moment to explore the advantages aswell as the disadvantages of each. Let’s start with a work at home job. There are lots of optionsout there and some of the advantages and disadvantages may notapply to some of them, but in general you’ll find the following.Hands down the greatest advantage of a job is that you’llreceive a regular paycheck. If you put 40 hours of work in, youknow you’ll get paid for those 40 hours. With most WAH Jobs youcan also count on getting about the same amount of hours. Itallows you to plan your day and week around your work scheduleeasily. You do not need any upfront investment. Please stay awayfrom work at home jobs that ask you for any type of fee. Theyare scams. Don’t waist your time and money. The last advantageof a job I would like to mention is that you’ll get instantrewards with a job. You work one week, you’ll get paid the next.No need to keep yourself motivated to keep working. You’ll berewarded by your paycheck at the end of the week. Now don’t run out and get a job quite yet. There is a backsideto all this as well. You will still have a boss that tells youwhat to do. You can also lose a job on a moments notice. You arenot building any residual income that would allow you to slowdown after you put some time into it. Unless you are puttingmoney into a 401K, you won’t get paid once you stop working. Ajob also allows you less flexibility. Your boss and colleaguesare depending on you work. This being said, lets move on to a work at home business. Yes,just the idea of it seems daunting, but there are thousands ofwork at home moms, that start profitable businesses every year. With some planning and determination you can do the same if youchoose to do so. Many of us have grown up in households ofjobholders. A business seems to be this scary, risky entity. Itreally isn’t though and there are so many great resources onthis site and elsewhere that will guide you along the way. Takea good look at the advantages and disadvantages of owning yourown business and make a decision on the facts and what you thinkwould work best for you and your family. Please do not let fearmake this decision for you. Lets take a look at the advantages of a WAH business. You aregoing to be your own boss. You call the shots. This gives you alarge amount of freedom on how you run your business, how youtreat your customers etc. It also allows you a large amount offlexibility. If you’d rather work on your website today insteadof writing a sales copy, go for it. As long as you keep thingsbalanced and get everything done that needs attention, you canallow yourself a lot of flexibility. You can also move at yourown pace. There isn’t anybody (other than your bank account)that you are slowing down if you decide to spend the day at thepark with your kids instead of taking inventory. You are alsothe one that determines how much you make. The harder you work, and the better you get at this, the more money you will make. Ata job you get an hourly wage or a salary that’s reviewed aboutonce year. With a business it is up to you to generate as muchincome as you would like. Your own business also allows you tochange with times as your interests or markets change. You maystart out as the owner of a dating site, but then become muchmore interested in wedding planning. Don’t get me wrong, owning a business does have itsdisadvantages as well. You usually have to invest at least asmall amount of money and most definitely a lot of time upfront. This is not an instant reward kind of thing. You may be workingfor months without seeing much of a monetary reward. You’ll haveto be prepared to live without much of a paycheck for a while. If you are currently working, you may want to consider keepingyour job for a while and building your business in your sparetime. No matter what you decide, I would like to congratulate you fortaking the first steps to becoming a work at home mom. Alwayskeep in mind that the reason you are doing all this is to beable to spend more time with your kids, to get them out ofdaycare, to bring home a check to help with expenses or whateverelse your reason may be. It isn’t always going to be easy tobalance family life and work life, particularly when they starthappening in the same house. But keep the reason why you aredoing this in mind and you’ll get through it. And don’t forgetto have some fun along the way.
